Advanced Micro Devices said Thursday that it had discontinued its digital television and handheld businesses, prompting a one-time charge of nearly a billion dollars. Not surprisingly, AMD reported a hefty loss for the second quarter of 2008.

AMD reported a net loss of $1.19 billion on revenue of $1.35 billion for the quarter, which included a one-time charge for the discontinued operations of $920 million. Without the charge, AMD would have reported a loss of $260 million. A quarter ago, AMD reported a loss of $358 million on $1.46 billion; a year ago, AMD reported a net loss of $600 million on revenue of $1.31 billion.

AMD has now lost money in seven straight quarters.
