HOW TO PLAY COOP:

0.get update 1 and 2(this its very important)
1.
Launch the game and open CONSOLE (to enable console go to options>Keyboard>Advanced and tick "enable developers console", then you can open it with "~" key)
2. Send your friend your IP, for example: "connect 81.57.664.892" (he will need to type that in console to join)
3. Type in console "map mp_coop_start" to start CO-OP game (or chose any of the other maps.. because this is the first mission)
4. When you type in "map mp_coop_start " this is when your friend has to connect to the server using the line "connect 81.57.664.892" (remember this is just an example, you have to use your own IP).
5. Use changelevel or changelevel2 commands in console instead of map to change levels so you won't get droped to main menu between levels. Example "changelevel2 mp_coop_wall_intro"
6. Enjoy!
P.S: I advice you to use voice communication software to communicate such as skype/team speak or ventrilo so you can inform your partner when to connect to the server and it's easier to complete levels that way as well ; )
COOP Maps(after the last level from the chapter get the console on and type: changelevel (the next level):

Nice tutorial, if anyone has trouble with this method then dekart811's over at cs.rin.ru has released a co-op launcher, does basically this but makes it easier

Nice tutorial. Moreover, does not seem to require more than PORTAL2 SKIDROW and UPDATE1. Refurbished multiplayer instructions:

Code:
launch the game and open the console with the tilde key (enable through options > keyboard);
send your partner your ip address (which you can obtain by sending "net_status" to the console);
then, enter "map mp_coop_start" at the console (or any of the successive cooperative missions) to start;
he has to send the "connect 255.255.255.255" (matching your internal address) command while loading to join;

indeed, presupposes a lan and a (windows) firewall exception -- however, it might work just as well using external addresses.

still some things need testing (please report back here if you have any info about those!), such as:

- difference between changelevel and changelevel2 commands (helping to change levels without getting dropped to main menu between levels (e.g., "changelevel mp_coop_wall_intro"));
- some people needing sv_lan coop mp_wait_for_other_player_notconnecting_timeout commands for it to work at all -- any other instances like this?
- ability to play using one computer only, using ss_enable and ss_map_ (prefixing) commands so as to enable split screen?

Hmm... How to find my IP?
you have many opportunities! 1.go to http://www.whatismyip.com/
2.go to start>run>cmd and type ipconfig /all and you will find something like this 123.123.1.1 it looks like that but its not your ip
3.use Hamachi or Tunngle for a virtual IP so noone will know your real ip (when useing hamachi it shows up on the window your ip and with Tunngle left down screen its Virtal IP
4.search on google?
